Assalamualaikum.

During our stays in Africa, my wife and I wake up early for our early morning prayers because Fajr was around 5:20 a.m. and sunrise is at 6:30 a.m. After prayers we head directly to Kasambabezi Lodge in-house restaurant, as breakfast starts at 6:00 a.m. daily.

Our itinerary this morning features a highly anticipated excursion to Chobe National Park, located in Zimbabwe’s beautiful neighboring country—Botswana. The cross-border journey is scheduled to begin promptly at 7:30 AM. Since we found ourselves with some wonderful free time right after finishing breakfast, we eagerly took the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful, morning stroll around the scenic grounds of Kasambabezi Lodge before our departure.

A Calming Morning Walk

🔹It was an absolutely beautiful morning, and the crisp air felt incredibly refreshing as we stepped outside. We took our time walking down the neatly paved pathways that snake gracefully through the property toward the guest rooms. The thoughtful landscaping creates a wonderful, authentic forest feel that completely surrounds you in a soothingly green canopy. 

🔹After the high-energy excitement of yesterday’s border crossing and waterfall trek, starting our day amidst such calm, peaceful, and quiet natural surroundings was the perfect way to center ourselves before our next big safari.

Our Premium Neighbors

🔹As we wandered along the shaded lawns, we passed right by Room No. 06, which sits directly adjacent to our own sanctuary, Room No. 05. Much like ours, this unit falls under the resort's premium Deluxe Room category. 

🔹The building features a charming, private covered veranda complete with cozy outdoor furniture, a classic iron lantern, and a small manicured garden bed out front. Masterful Landscape Design

🔹I was completely captivated by the masterful design of the grounds as we followed a gorgeous, curving cut-stone pathway. The landscaper did an exceptional job arranging an array of different, vibrant shrubberies and lush ferns that line the edge of the trail. 

🔹The path elegantly guides you deeper into a tranquil, hidden clearing situated right underneath a thick canopy of mature, shady trees. Walking through this cool, sun-dappled greenery felt like exploring a private botanical garden, highlighting the immense care put into making the lodge a true oasis.

Savoring Precious Moments Together

🔹When traveling on packed itineraries, we seldom get the chance to actually slow down and enjoy a hotel or resort's grounds, since we are usually only back in our rooms for quick meals and a night's sleep. Because of that, these quiet morning moments were incredibly precious for both my wife and me. 

🔹Finding a beautifully paved cobblestone courtyard tucked under the trees, complete with elegant, ornate stone benches and a charming little coffee table, felt like an open invitation to sit back and listen to the birds. It allowed us to truly savor the peaceful pace of Africa before the morning clock struck 7:30 AM.

🔹While strolling past a beautifully manicured planter bed, we encountered a magnificent traditional Shona stone sculpture hand-carved right here in Zimbabwe. This stunning piece depicts a stylized human figure embodying a classic motherly form, which is a hallmark theme of Zimbabwean contemporary stone sculpture. 

🔹Shona sculptures are world-renowned for their unique, masterful technique, which blends raw, unpolished, heavily textured grey stone with highly polished, smooth dark surfaces to create an incredible contrast. 🔹The main outdoor display area of the Bako Collections gift shop is beautifully laid out under a canopy of green trees, featuring a modern glass-and-steel studio structure. Arranged neatly on a long red bench out front is a spectacular selection of soapstone and serpentine carvings depicting wildlife and abstract forms. 

🔹The vibrant storefront signage features colorful portraits of traditional tribal figures, creating a lively and deeply welcoming display. Pausing here allowed us to fully appreciate how beautifully Kasambabezi Lodge promotes local artisans, leaving us completely inspired by the creative heartbeat of Zimbabwe just before our tour bus arrived.

Peaceful Morning by the Pool

🔹Wandering back toward the heart of the property, the pool deck took on a completely different charm under the soft morning light. The overhead string lights from last night were switched off, allowing the bright blue pool basin to mirror the crisp, clear sky above. 

🔹Surrounded by wide palm fronds and manicured greenery, the empty patio furniture and quiet lounge chairs felt incredibly peaceful. Taking a moment to appreciate the absolute stillness of the water was a wonderful, meditative pause before the fast-paced energy of our cross-border safari day began.

🔹Continuing our morning loop around the guest villas, we passed right by Room No. 17. Falling into the resort's premium Deluxe Room category, the cottage layout features a lovely white stucco facade with a classic stepped parapet roofline. A neatly paved concrete path cuts cleanly through a vibrant green lawn, framed beautifully by bright yellow-green hedges and tropical shrubs.

At the Reception

🔹Our next stop on the morning walk brought us inside the main lobby. The reception area is beautifully designed with polished stone tile floors and large, bright windows that let in plenty of natural morning light. The center of the room features a stunning, solid wood reception counter crafted from rich local timber, where a friendly and incredibly professional staff member sat. 

🔹Decorated with lush green indoor planters and a unique rustic chandelier hanging overhead, the lobby leaves a lasting impression of genuine Zimbabwean hospitality, making our stay at Kasambabezi Lodge a truly pleasant experience.

🔹Heading toward the main building, we stood in front of the impressive, double-story hospitality pavilion. This central structure elegantly houses the reception lounge on the ground floor and the open-air dining hall right above it. Built with a beautiful stone-textured facade, striking white columns, and a wide covered veranda, it seamlessly blends modern design with African resort luxury. 

🔹A few fellow travelers clad in warm jackets were already gathering on the manicured lawn out front, adjusting their masks and checking their gear as the final countdown to our 7:30 AM departure drew near.

🔹Pausing right at the main entrance of Kasambabezi Lodge, you get a wonderful vantage point of how beautifully structured the resort layout is. Shaded by a massive, ancient tree, a short set of wide stone steps leads guests down into a beautifully manicured central lawn.

🔹Stepping right outside the secure perimeter wall, the immediate exterior of the property is just as pristine and beautifully maintained as the interior grounds. The roadside is lined with neat brick paving and a healthy green verge hosting a row of young native trees and a signpost greeting visitors. 

🔹Adding a gorgeous burst of color to the morning scenery are several lush bushes overflowing with vibrant red bougainvillea flowers. Looking down the quiet asphalt lane under a vast, cloudless sky, the fresh air and perfectly clean surroundings made our moments at the property feel incredibly peaceful.

A Flawless Safari Forecast

🔹Standing on the driveway as the clock ticked closer to our 7:30 AM departure, the horizon treated us to a spectacular morning view that served as a fantastic indication of good weather ahead for the day. The soft, golden ambient glow of a rising sun painted the lower sky, transitioning smoothly into a crisp, deep cyan blue overhead. 

🔹With a perfectly clear atmosphere, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves, and the local road stretching out cleanly ahead, nature was giving us its official seal of approval for our upcoming cross-border expedition to Chobe National Park.

Early Birds Gather

🔹A few minutes after 7:00 AM, everyone started to gather near the front entrance of the lodge, eager to kick off our journey into Botswana. Both my wife and I were just so incredibly happy with our fellow group members. Throughout this entire journey, they have proved to be the ultimate dream travel companions—always early, perfectly organized, and exceptionally on time. 

🔹Standing by the heavy stone pillars and brick driveway in the crisp morning air, there was a wonderful buzz of collective energy as we readied our daypacks for the day's upcoming safari.

An Unexpected Roadside Twist

🔹While waiting here at the main gate, we unfortunately received some disappointing news regarding our transit logistics. It turned out that our special bus from yesterday—the one beautifully equipped with an onboard kitchen, lounge tables, and face-to-face seating—was supposed to take us to Botswana this morning but had suddenly broken down. As a result, our departure got a bit delayed while the local travel agency in Zimbabwe scrambled to arrange a suitable replacement vehicle for us. 

🔹This hitch highlighted another reason why we absolutely love this group of travelers—despite the unexpected delay to our safari schedule, not a single person complained or lost their smile!

Local Morning Strollers

🔹To keep ourselves entertained during the short delay, we watched the quiet local life pass by just outside the main gate. A wonderful highlight was spotting a resident taking her two beautiful dogs out for a morning walk down the paved lane. 

🔹Watching a super adorable little Jack Russell Terrier happily trotting right alongside a majestic, well-behaved German Shepherd added a sweet touch of warmth and everyday normalcy to our morning, keeping our spirits high as we waited for our new ride to arrive beneath the clear blue African sky.

Keeping Spirits High with Group Photos

🔹Proving that a good tour leader can turn any hiccup into a fun milestone, our fantastic Malaysian guide, Mr. Eddy, did a stellar job keeping everyone's spirits up. He gathered the entire group in front of the lodge's beautiful stone branding wall to take a series of cheerful group photographs. 

🔹Standing and squatting together with cameras, and sun hats, everyone flashed giant smiles for the lens. It turned what could have been a tedious waiting period into a wonderful bonding moment, leaving us more united than ever as the replacement vehicle finally pulled up to carry us toward the wild landscapes of Botswana.

🔹Zooming closer into the scene reveals the true, atmospheric beauty of a Victoria Falls morning. As the sun rises higher, its intense light catches the rising dust and morning mist, creating a thick, ethereal golden haze that blankets the road.

🔹The morning began with a buzz of anticipation outside Kasambabezi Lodge as our guides finalized the logistics for a highly anticipated excursion. Our guide from Malaysia, Mr. Eddy, huddled up with Ms. Precious, our local Zimbabwean guide, to carefully review the day's itinerary. 

🔹We were embarking on a thrilling cross-border journey into Zimbabwe’s beautiful neighboring country—Botswana—for a full-day safari adventure in Chobe National Park. Watching them coordinate seamlessly instantly gave us complete peace of mind for the journey ahead.

Splitting Up for the Ride

🔹Shortly after the briefing, our replacement transport pulled up: a spacious coaster bus alongside a comfortable MPV. With the group dividing between the two vehicles, my wife and I opted to ride in the coaster bus alongside Ms. Precious, allowing us to soak in her local knowledge along the way. 

🔹Meanwhile, Mr. Eddy accompanied the remaining group members in the MPV. Once everyone was comfortably loaded up, our two-vehicle convoy officially set off toward the border.

The Journey to Kasane

🔹Settling into the coaster bus, the interior was alive with quiet excitement as we watched the landscapes roll past. Our immediate destination was Kasane, a bustling border town in Botswana where we would soon transition from the road to the water for a legendary Chobe River safari. 

🔹Sitting back in the air-conditioned cabin, chatting with fellow travelers and Ms. Precious, the travel time flew by as the reality of exploring a brand-new country began to set in.

Cruising the Roads of Zimbabwe

🔹The drive itself offered a beautiful glimpse into the heart of the region's countryside. Looking out ahead, the Zimbabwean roads stretched out wide and inviting under a flawlessly blue sky, flanked by dense clusters of native trees and dry bushland typical of the African savanna. 

🔹The smooth, winding tarmac cutting through the sun-drenched landscape made for an incredibly scenic commute, proving once again that the journey is just as memorable as the destination.

Setting Expectations and Border Briefings

🔹As our coaster bus smoothed onto the highway, our guide, Ms. Precious, stood up at the front to set expectations for the exciting day ahead. 

🔹Capturing everyone's attention, she walked us through the logistics of our cross-border transit: "Good morning, everyone! Sit back and make yourselves comfortable as we make our way toward the Kazungula Border. We are currently leaving Zimbabwe and will soon be entering the beautiful Republic of Botswana. The drive to the border takes about an hour. Please take a moment now to ensure your passports are ready." Her warm, organized briefing immediately turned what could have been stressful border paperwork into a seamless part of the adventure.

Introduction to Botswana

🔹"As we cross over, you are entering one of Africa’s greatest success stories. Botswana is a peaceful, politically stable, and incredibly vast country. It is unique because nearly 40% of its land is entirely dedicated to national parks, reserves, and wildlife management areas. 

🔹The local currency is the Pula, which literally translates to 'rain'—a testament to how precious water is in this beautiful landscape. You will also notice a shift in the terrain as we enter the edges of the great Kalahari Basin, characterized by flatter land and unique teak and mopane woodlands."

Chobe National Park & Wildlife Expectations

🔹"Our destination today is Chobe National Park, Botswana’s very first national park, established in 1967. Chobe is world-famous for one spectacular feature: it hosts the largest continuous elephant population on Earth, with over 120,000 elephants roaming the region. 

🔹We will be exploring the Chobe Riverfront. Because the river is the only permanent water source for miles, it acts as a natural magnet for wildlife. Today, you can expect to see massive herds of elephants bathing, large pods of hippos, giant Nile crocodiles, and unique antelope like the water-loving puku and lechwe. It is also an absolute paradise for predators, so keep your eyes peeled for lions and leopards lounging in the shade."

The Wild Corridor of Kazungula Road

🔹The drive itself from Victoria Falls toward the Botswana border at Kazungula is a stunning, 70-kilometer journey along the A8 highway. What makes this stretch of tarmac entirely unique is that it is far more than just a transit route connecting two towns; it carves directly through an unfenced, major international wilderness corridor. 

🔹With no fences separating the road from the surrounding wilderness, animals migrate completely freely across this landscape. Looking out the front windshield, the quiet, open road ahead felt less like a standard highway and more like a gateway into an untamed world.

Sharp Eyes and Sudden Wildlife Spottings

🔹Traveling at normal highway speeds in a large coaster bus makes spotting wildlife quite a challenge for the untrained eye, but Ms. Precious proved to have absolute superhero vision. Mid-sentence, she suddenly pointed out the left window, alerting the cabin to a family of giraffes hiding just beyond the tree line. 

🔹Peering through the glass, we were amazed to see their long necks elegantly weaving through the dense forest canopy—a thrilling reminder of just how close we were to the wild at every moment of this journey.

A Lucky Roadside Safari Bonus

🔹Because the Kazungula Road was completely deserted at that exact moment, our driver was able to slow down, safely park along the roadside, and give us a few unforgettable minutes to appreciate the encounter. We all scrambled for our cameras to capture a gorgeous, clear view of a giraffe staring right back at us from the thick brush. 

🔹The absolute highlight of the moment was the realization that we hadn't even reached Botswana or started our official safari yet—Africa was simply delivering its magic right to our roadside window.

Rolling Through the Untamed Bushveld

🔹The drive along the Kazungula corridor continuously shifts between open, sun-drenched savanna and dense clusters of untamed forest. Looking out into the landscape, the morning sun hangs bright in a flawless blue sky, casting a brilliant glare over kilometers of vibrant green bushveld. 

🔹This thick vegetation isn’t just beautiful scenery; it serves as a crucial habitat and migratory pathway for local wildlife. Traveling through this rich forest network makes you realize just how seamlessly the road coexists with the expansive wilderness surrounding it.

Glimpsing the Mighty Zambezi

🔹As we drew closer to the border intersection, the thick brush broke away to reveal a breathtaking view of the Zambezi River shimmering in the distance. The wide, slow-moving waters are beautifully fragmented by lush, small islets, including the notable African Dakake Island. 

🔹Seeing this legendary river from the window adds a profound sense of scale to the journey, serving as a reminder of the massive natural borders that have shaped the geography and history of Southern Africa for centuries.

Approaching the Quadripoint and Kazungula Bridge

🔹Emerging above the dense treeline, the striking white pillars of the Kazungula Bridge suddenly came into view. This structure is far more than a simple crossing; it is an incredible engineering marvel and a vital geopolitical asset in Southern Africa. It sits at a critical global hub where the borders of four nations—Botswana, Zambia, Namibia, and Zimbabwe—converge in extremely close proximity. 

🔹Officially opened on May 10, 2021, this multi-million dollar infrastructure project replaced the notoriously slow and risky pontoon ferry system that used to carry passengers and cargo across the river, entirely revolutionizing travel and trade in the region.

Approaching the Gateway to Botswana

🔹The final stretch of our drive toward the Kazungula Border Post on the Zimbabwe side was marked by a sudden change in traffic. Peering through the front windshield of our coaster bus, the previously deserted road gave way to a dense, slow-moving fleet of massive heavy haulage lorries. 

🔹These giant trucks, lined up neatly along the roadside, were a clear and exciting indicator that we were approaching one of Southern Africa's most vital, bustling trade and transit checkpoints.

Navigating the Border Infrastructure

🔹Rolling slowly past the long lines of freight transport, we finally arrived at the core infrastructure of the border post. Looking out the window, we spotted a modest, practical building topped with a distinct green roof, standing next to telecommunication containers and satellite dishes.

🔹Once our vehicle came to a stop, it was time to stretch our legs and get to work. We gathered our belongings and stepped out of the coaster bus into the warm morning air, instantly joining a lively queue of fellow travelers winding along the side of the immigration building. 

🔹There was a shared sense of traveler camaraderie in the air as we held onto our passports, waiting patiently for our turn at the counter to officially stamp out of Zimbabwe.

A Coordinated Border Transition

🔹The cross-border process is a perfectly orchestrated dance between passengers and vehicles. While our group remained on foot to navigate the pedestrian queues and immigration stamps, our empty coaster bus cleared its own vehicle checks and slowly advanced ahead into the Botswana border zone.

A Fast-Moving Queue at Immigration

🔹Border crossings can sometimes be unpredictable, but luck was completely on our side this morning. Stepping into the outdoor corridor of the Zimbabwe Immigration Office, we were thrilled to find only a modest line ahead of us under the clear blue sky. 

🔹The queue moved remarkably fast and efficiently, keeping our momentum alive. Within just a few minutes, we were stepping through the entry door to get our paperwork verified, turning what can often be a tedious travel hurdle into a breeze.

Regrouping and a 15-Minute Record

🔹Once our passports were stamped, we stepped back out into the morning sun to wait just outside the building. When traveling as part of a tour group, taking a moment to gather everyone together before moving forward is an essential rule of thumb. 

🔹Standing beneath the snapping colors of the Zimbabwean flag, we realized the entire process—from joining the queue to completing our stamps and stepping out to the transition point—had taken less than 15 minutes. It was an incredible relief that set a wonderfully positive tone for the rest of our day.

Stepping Across the Border Fence

🔹With our entire group officially stamped out of Zimbabwe, we made the brief cross-border walk directly into Botswana. It was fascinating to compare this transition to our journey to Zambia the previous day; while the Zimbabwe-Zambia border is dramatically carved out by the vast waters of the Zambezi River, the boundary between Zimbabwe and Botswana is purely overland, separated cleanly by a simple security fence and pedestrian gates. Walking through the open gate with our backpacks on felt like a monumental step into a new country.

Riding to the Botswana Immigration Post

🔹Even though our feet were technically on Botswana soil, we weren't entirely done with the administrative process just yet. The official Botswana passport stamping complex sits quite a bit further down the road, making it a bit too far to comfortably reach on foot. 

🔹Thankfully, our trusty coaster bus and accompanying MPV were already waiting for us right past the gate on the dusty flat. We quickly hopped back into the cabin, ready for a short drive to the final checkpoint that would officially clear us for our Chobe safari.

Off to get our Botswana stamps! Because the Botswana immigration office sits further down the road, our coaster bus picked us up for the final stretch. 

Arriving at the Checkpoint

🔹Before queuing for the immigration office at the Kazungula One-Stop Border Post, our entry into Botswana begins at a dedicated Veterinary Control Checkpoint. Managed carefully by Botswana's Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), this biosecurity control point serves as the nation's first line of defense. 

🔹The physical layout forces a brief stop, ensuring every incoming traveler and vehicle is accounted for before entering the main administrative complex.

The Shoe Dipping Ritual

🔹Clearing civilian immigration requires a quick step into a shallow mat or trough soaked in a specialized citric acid chemical solution designed to sanitize the soles of our footwear. It is a thorough process—if you have extra shoes packed away in your luggage, customs officers will frequently request that you pull them out to be sprayed or dipped individually. 

🔹Vehicles face the exact same scrutiny, rolling through a massive, flooded chemical dip to completely sterilize their tires before hitting the open road.

Understanding the Regulations

🔹The prominent signage highlights Botswana's strict Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) Control protocols, an essential distinction for travelers to understand. Unlike Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)—a mild illness affecting humans—FMD is a highly contagious viral disease that ravages cloven-hoofed animals like cattle, sheep, and pigs. 

🔹Because Botswana’s economic stability is heavily anchored by its premium beef exports to strict international markets, preventing an outbreak is treated with the highest urgency as a matter of critical national economic security.

🔹While the official signage at the Kazungula One-Stop Border Post formally designates this area as the Veterinary Department or Veterinary Cordon, you rarely hear those names used on the ground. 

🔹Instead, tour guides, drivers, and seasoned overlanders colloquially refer to this unique border ritual simply as the "Veterinary Check" or the "Shoe Dip." It is a quick, memorable experience that serves as a sensory reminder of how closely tied Botswana's environment is to its local law enforcement.

The Grand Tree and the Border Ecosystem

🔹While waiting at the Kazungula One-Stop Border Post, a glance upward reveals a beautiful, sprawling canopy teeming with unexpected residents—local monkeys. Although the border facility is not officially located within Chobe National Park, the reserve’s boundary sits just a few kilometers to the west. 

🔹Because Botswana strictly enforces a policy of keeping its wildlife reserves completely unfenced, animals flow seamlessly through the town of Kasane and directly across the border post property, offering travelers a striking introduction to the country's natural integration.

Wildlife in the Branches

🔹Spotting primates like Chacma baboons or Vervet monkeys nested inside the old, textured trees of the border post is a daily occurrence here. The facility sits squarely within the Kavango Zambezi (KAZA) Transfrontier Conservation Area, the largest protected wilderness partnership on earth, where animals roam free from political or park boundaries. 🔹These highly adaptable primates are heavily drawn to human transit hubs because the local flora provides excellent foraging opportunities, and they are naturally attracted to food and trash discarded by passing travelers.

Leaving the Veterinary Checkpoint

🔹After wrapping up the mandatory shoe and tire disinfection process, we officially moved past the Veterinary Control Checkpoint. 

🔹It is truly incredible to realize how a straightforward, low-tech prevention measure—like walking through a citric acid footbath—serves as the primary shield safeguarding Botswana’s absolute economic lifeline: its massive livestock and premium beef export industry. 

🔹With the biosecurity checks completed, we were cleared to move forward to the administrative phase of the crossing.

The Walk to Port Health

🔹With the agricultural safety measures behind us, we set off on foot along the paved border lanes toward a white building visible just up ahead. 

🔹This structure houses the Port Health facility, which acts as the second major screening tier at the Kazungula One-Stop Border Post. Every traveler must pass through this station for a quick medical evaluation before being granted permission to queue up for civil immigration.

The Health Screening Process

🔹Operated directly by Botswana's Ministry of Health, the Port Health checkpoint functions as a vital frontline defense for regional disease surveillance. For the majority of day-trippers and tourists crossing over from neighboring Zimbabwe, the screening is a very rapid process. 

🔹As you step inside, officials monitor your body temperature—either via non-contact handheld infrared thermometers or overhead thermal imaging cameras—to instantly flag anyone traveling with a fever. While some arrivals might face rigorous travel history declarations or Yellow Fever certificate verifications during active regional alerts, our temperature checks went smoothly, and we were quickly funneled toward the final immigration building.

The Welcome Sign Photoshoot

🔹With all the health clearance protocols successfully sorted, we walked directly toward the main immigration counters to finally get our passports stamped. 

🔹However, we couldn't resist a classic travel tradition right before heading inside. We stopped for a quick photoshoot next to the prominent welcome monument reading: “Welcome to Botswana – Kazungula Road Border Post.” It was the perfect commemorative marker to celebrate smoothly navigating the multiple layers of Botswana’s thorough border entry process.

Safari Fleet Sightings

🔹As we made our way toward the Botswana Immigration Office for our mandatory passport checks, the view outside instantly shifted our mindsets into adventure mode. Lined up right next to the office was an impressive fleet of open 4x4 safari vehicles.

The Anatomy of a Game Viewer

🔹These heavy-duty vehicles are beautifully engineered for optimal game viewing, consisting mostly of modified, beige Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series models. 

🔹Stripping away the standard enclosed cabin, they feature a completely open-sided configuration with tiered, elevated seating to give every passenger an unobstructed, 360-degree view of the wilderness. A sturdy canvas canopy stretches over the top, keeping travelers safely shielded from the intense African sun without blocking the sights and sounds of the bush.

The Final Stretch

🔹With the exciting safari vehicles in plain sight, our group kept focused and diligently walked in a single file line alongside the main administrative building. 

🔹Navigating a busy international hub like the Kazungula One-Stop Border Post requires following clear footpaths to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. This final leg of the walk brought us right up to the official entrance of the immigration department.

The Immigration Queue

🔹Upon arrival at the entrance, we created a sizable line of 20 of us extending well out the door and wrapping along the side of the building. We felt incredibly lucky that the layout allowed us to queue directly within the shaded area under the building's roof overhang and air conditioning units. 

🔹Escaping the direct mid-day heat made the final wait feel quick and comfortable as we eagerly anticipated getting our passports stamped.

🔹The Botswana flag is flying at half-mast in this photo because the country was in an official period of national mourning following the death of its former President, Festus Gontebanye Mogae. Fyi this photo was taken on 12th May 2026. 

🔹Former President Mogae, who served as Botswana's third president from 1998 to 2008, passed away on May 8, 2026, at the age of 86. He was widely celebrated across Africa for his exceptional management of the country's diamond economy and his progressive, comprehensive leadership in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. He even won the prestigious Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership in 2008. 

🔹Following his passing, the government of Botswana initially declared three days of mourning, which was subsequently extended to May 16, 2026, to span until his state funeral. During this time, a presidential directive required all national flags at government buildings, public institutions, and international border posts—such as the one Ms. Precious and her tour group were crossing in your photo—to be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect and national remembrance.

🔹It is truly fascinating how a nation's response to loss reveals its core character. Botswana's handling of the mourning period deeply mirrors its national guiding philosophy of Botho—a traditional Tswana concept emphasizing mutual respect, civility, and human dignity.

Back in the Coaster

🔹With our passport stamps secured and customs cleared, we hopped right back into our coaster bus to head straight for the riverfront. 

🔹Reflecting on the experience, we were absolutely blown away by the efficiency of the Kazungula One-Stop Border Post. The entire sequence—boarding the bus after leaving the Zimbabwe side, driving to the Veterinary Control Checkpoint, completing the mandatory shoe sanitization, clearing the Port Health screening, walking over to the main Botswana Immigration Office, and finishing our final passport checks—took an astonishing 33 minutes total. It was an incredibly seamless transition into Botswana!

Looking Out at the Crowds

🔹As our coaster pulled away from the main building, we glanced out the window and noticed the border facility was getting significantly busier. Long queues of newly arrived tourists were beginning to snake along the exterior walls under the air conditioning units. 

🔹Seeing the crowds build up made us appreciate our swift 33-minute crossing even more, proving that beating the mid-morning rush is the ultimate key to a stress-free African border experience.

The Open Road

🔹Leaving the border post behind, the road opened up into a beautiful, sun-drenched landscape as we traveled deeper into the Kasane region. The smooth tarmac is lined with lush, green bushveld and unique street lighting that curves elegantly over the asphalt. 

🔹Watching the local transit and safari vans cruise along this open corridor heightened our anticipation for the wilderness ahead, marking the official start of our Botswana road journey.

Passing Local Landmarks

🔹As we made our way toward the water, the roadside offered a charming look into everyday life in the border town. We coasted past a prominent, bright red commercial building sporting a sign for "Buy 'N Build," a local hardware and building supply store. 

🔹Passing these neighborhood businesses provides a wonderful sense of place, grounding the transition between the strict biosecurity of the border post and the pristine natural beauty waiting for us at the riverfront.

The Main Crop Fields

🔹As we traveled toward the riverfront, the dry scenery gave way to sweeping fields highlighting Botswana’s resilient agricultural sector. Because much of the country is covered by the arid Kalahari Desert, large-scale cultivation is heavily concentrated in unique pockets like the Chobe region and the commercial hub of Pandamatenga. 

🔹These fields yield vital local staples like drought-resistant Sorghum (Mabele) and Maize, which are used to make traditional porridges like bogobe and pap, alongside hardy pulses, cowpeas, and millets uniquely suited to survive the sandy African soils.

🔹A sudden flash of vivid color caught our attention along the roadside, revealing a dense, thriving plantation of banana plants. Looking closer, we noticed that the heavy fruit bunches hanging from the stalks were wrapped completely in distinctive blue protective bags. 

🔹This specialized farming technique is essential in the wild Chobe region, shielding the delicate, maturing bananas from local birds, hungry insects, and the intense, direct rays of the African sun before they can be harvested.

A Field of Red

🔹Further along our route, the typical green and golden hues of the countryside suddenly transformed into a spectacular field of deep crimson. This beautiful patch of land is dedicated to cultivating Grain Amaranth or a closely related, vibrantly colored variant of Red Sorghum. 

🔹Seeing these expansive agricultural plots right on the outskirts of Kasane shows a side of Botswana that many travelers miss—highlighting how locals utilize the fertile soils near the river systems to diversify their food production.

🔹Getting a closer look at the edge of the field, the unique structure of these crops is absolutely mesmerizing. The plants boast remarkably tall, reddish-pink stalks capped with densely packed seed heads that turn brilliant shades of deep red and maroon as they mature.

Entering Kasane Town

🔹After leaving the strict biosecurity checkpoints behind, our road trip continued with a smooth drive straight into the heart of Kasane town. This bustling hub serves as the main launchpad for travelers eager to experience Chobe National Park. 

🔹The clean, well-paved transit roads are framed by sprawling acacia trees and local signage, offering a wonderful first glimpse of the charming town infrastructure that sits gracefully alongside the wild African bush.

First Glimpse of the Chobe River

🔹Peering out the window, a bright band of blue suddenly emerged on the horizon, signaling our arrival alongside the legendary Chobe River. This dynamic waterway is the literal lifeblood of the entire region, acting as a natural magnet for massive herds of elephants, buffalo, and diverse birdlife. 

🔹Interestingly, this river changes its name depending on geography—starting its journey in Angola as the Kwando, crossing Namibia’s Caprivi Strip as the Linyanti, and finally becoming the Chobe here as it forms the natural border between Botswana and Namibia before merging into the mighty Zambezi.

The Magnificent Baobab

🔹Our jaws dropped as we passed a massive, ancient African Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata) standing proudly in a manicured green patch along the road. Frequently referred to as the "Tree of Life," these iconic prehistoric giants can live for thousands of years and serve as vital miniature ecosystems, storing thousands of liters of water in their thick trunks to survive dry seasons. 

🔹Spotting one of these sprawling, majestic sentinels up close is a quintessential African experience that makes you feel deeply connected to the ancient history of the savanna.

Key Characteristics & Biology

🔹Water Reservoirs: These slow-growing trees have a spongy, fibrous trunk that allows them to store up to 120,000 liters of water, helping them survive the intense dry seasons of northern Botswana. Because of this unique pulp composition, they behave structurally more like giant species of grass than traditional hardwood. 

🔹The "Upside-Down" Look: During the dry months, the trees drop all their leaves. The stark, tangled branches spread out wide over the top, making it look as though the tree was yanked out of the ground and replanted upside down. 

🔹Extreme Longevity: Many of the prominent baobabs in the Kasane area are estimated to be between 800 to over 1,000 years old. 

Ecological and Cultural Importance

🔹Wildlife Support: The trees serve as vital ecosystems. Elephants frequently strip the nutritious bark for hydration during dry spells, while birds, baboons, and bats rely heavily on their leaves, night-blooming flowers, and vitamin-rich fruit pods. 

🔹Human History: Due to their massive, naturally hollow centers, specific baobabs in Kasane have historically been utilized by people as landmarks, safe shelters, mail distribution points, and even temporary colonial prison cells.

🔹As we neared our destination, the town's lively culture came into full view at a collection of rustic roadside craft shops. Positioned just down from a local Shell station, these open-air markets display a beautiful array of colorful traditional textiles, intricately woven baskets, and handmade wooden wildlife carvings.

Our Seamless Journey to the Edge of Chobe

🔹Our morning began beautifully with a peaceful, post-breakfast stroll exploring the lush, tranquil grounds of Kasambabezi Lodge. With the sunrise setting a perfect tone for the day, we loaded into our coaster bus and set off. We hadn't even reached the border yet when Africa delivered its first magical surprise: we suddenly spotted majestic giraffes towering elegantly near the roadside vegetation. It was an incredible, unexpected prologue to our travel day and our very first big game sighting!

🔹Energized by the wildlife encounter, we arrived at the first checkpoint, where our border transit started incredibly fast—we spent less than 15 minutes clearing all formalities at the Zimbabwe border post.

🔹From there, the seamless pace kept going as we transitioned into Botswana. The entire sequence on the Botswana side—from boarding the bus after leaving Zimbabwe, completing the thorough Veterinary Control "Shoe Dip" to protect Botswana’s prized livestock, passing through the Port Health thermal screening, to getting our passports stamped at the main immigration building—took an astonishing 33 minutes flat.

🔹Back in the comfort of our coaster bus, we set off along the open roads toward the water, watching the border queues build behind us. The roadside scenery provided a fantastic look into local life and industry. We cruised past a patchwork of resilient agricultural fields, marveling at the bright blue bags shielding ripening banana plantations from birds and sun, and tracking rows of tall, vibrant Grain Amaranth turning a spectacular crimson under the blue sky.

🔹As we rolled directly into the welcoming heart of Kasane town, the scenery only grew more magical. We caught our very first, glistening glimpse of the iconic Chobe River—the shape-shifting international waterway that serves as the lifeblood for the region's wildlife. 

🔹Just off the tarmac, we found ourselves marveling at the ancient, towering frame of a majestic African Baobab, the legendary "Tree of Life." Passing the vibrant, colorful textiles and hand-carved souvenirs of the local roadside markets, we felt a deep sense of warmth and excitement. The transition from strict border security to pristine wilderness was complete, and we were officially ready to step onto our river boat cruise and dive into the wild.
