FROM SOUTH AFRICA TO ZIMBABWE - PART 02

Assalamualaikum.

Reaching the Runway Gateway
🔹Arriving at O.R. Tambo International Airport, ready to kick off Day 4.
🔹At exactly 9:30 a.m., our tour bus pulled up to the bustling drop-off lanes of O.R. Tambo International Airport. This morning marked the start of an incredibly action-packed, cross-border itinerary. Our immediate goal was catching our international flight to Victoria Falls International Airport in Zimbabwe. From there, the plan was to head straight for a local Zimbabwean lunch before crossing the border into Zambia that very same afternoon to experience the thundering Victoria Falls from the Zambian side! Watching the massive airport sign come into view, the sheer excitement of exploring two new countries in a single day officially set in.

Smooth Navigation & Group Synergy
🔹Heading deep into the terminal with the best travel crew.
🔹The moment we stepped inside, Evie took charge and masterfully guided us through the massive airport layout directly toward the South African Airways check-in zone. Having her expert navigation made a massive difference in keeping our transit entirely smooth and stress-free. I also have to give a huge shout-out to our incredible tour group. Every single member was phenomenally disciplined, offering full cooperation and following instructions from Evie and Eddy diligently. Traveling with a cohesive, drama-free group where everyone shows mutual respect and consideration ensures that nobody faces annoying delays, making the entire journey a total joy.

Checking In & Bittersweet Farewells
🔹A surprisingly quiet check-in counter and a temporary goodbye to Evie.
🔹We caught a fantastic break at the South African Airways counters, as there was barely any queue for the morning flight to Victoria Falls. The check-in process was a breeze, allowing us to drop our heavy rolling bags and secure our boarding passes in record time. Once our entire group was successfully checked in, we had to say a temporary goodbye to Evie. While she wasn't joining us across the border into Zimbabwe, knowing we would reunite with her back in Johannesburg for the later legs of our South African vacation made the farewell much easier!

Gazing Over the Atrium
🔹A spectacular view of the O.R. Tambo atrium on our way to Gate A21.
🔹After bidding Evie goodbye, we made our way along the upper levels, treating us to this sweeping, bird's-eye perspective of the airport's massive central atrium. The stunning architecture, with its intricate geometric floor tiling and soaring multi-story design, was bustling with travelers from all corners of the globe. With boarding passes in hand, we navigated straight through the international passport control and security checkpoints, heading down the bright corridors toward our departure lounge at Gate A21. The next time our feet touch the ground, we'll be in Zimbabwe!

Boarding Pass from O.R. Tambo International Airport to Victoria Falls International Airport.

Sophistication in Transit
🔹A sleek, modern walk down O.R. Tambo’s departure lanes.
🔹Navigating the terminal toward Gate A21 felt remarkably effortless. The airport looks exceptionally sleek, modern, and spacious. I loved how the crisp, clean lines of the contemporary architecture seamlessly combine with natural design elements, like the beautifully potted olive trees, to create a welcoming and balanced atmosphere. The entire terminal design masterfully blends heavy traveler functionality with top-tier modern aesthetics.

Convenience at Every Turn
🔹Open spaces and clear pathways for travelers on the move.
🔹As we walked further down the polished concourse, the sheer thoughtfulness of the layout became clear. The terminal offers incredibly clear, bright directional signage alongside perfectly spaced open seating areas and convenient coffee kiosks. Everything is laid out to ensure a completely stress-free experience for international passengers moving through the hub.

Retail therapy at "Out of Africa"
🔹Passing a vibrant collection of luxury boutiques and souvenir hubs.
🔹The vibrant shopping lane along our route was a true feast for the eyes. The terminal is packed to the brim with popular eateries, stylish diners, electronic retailers, travel essential shops, and luxury clothing boutiques. One store that immediately caught our attention was the grand Out of Africa souvenir shop, showcasing beautiful displays of local crafts and fashion that perfectly celebrated the continent's spirit.

The Perfect Coffee Stop
🔹A stylish coffee kiosk inviting passengers to slow down and relax.
🔹We also pass by a beautifully designed, open-concept island coffee kiosk. Framed by a prominent, glowing "Coffee" sign and lush hanging greenery, the spot features elegant white tub chairs and matching tables where travelers can comfortably lounge. It was the perfect visual invitation to grab a quick, aromatic pick-me-up and relax for a few minutes before diving into the boarding process.

The Call of "Out of Africa"
🔹A striking storefront celebrating the spirit of the continent.
🔹As we hurried down the departure lane, we couldn't help but admire the grand storefront of the Out of Africa souvenir shop. The entrance is a visual masterpiece, adorned with massive panels displaying beautiful portraits of traditional African tribes alongside meticulously crafted patterns. We were incredibly eager to step inside and check out their collection, but with our boarding call drawing closer by the minute, we unfortunately didn't have much time to fully dive into a long shopping session.

A Glimpse into the Bazaar
🔹Peerless craftsmanship stretching into every corner.
🔹Catching a quick view from the wide open entrance, the interior of the shop looked absolutely magical. Designed to resemble an upscale, winding African marketplace, the boutique features uniquely curved overhead wood installations draped in animal prints. Rows of polished display cases are packed to the brim with stunning local woodcarvings, handcrafted pottery, and premium gifts, creating a highly tempting, immersive retail space for departing travelers.

Treasures at the Threshold
🔹Spotting a brilliant array of hand-painted ostrich eggs.
🔹Right at the threshold of the boutique, a towering vertical display rack instantly caught my eye, loaded with beautifully hand-painted ostrich eggs. Each shell is a miniature canvas depicting vivid, colorful safari wildlife and intricate geometric tribal designs. Seeing a traveler pause to admire the artwork right next to stacks of curated coffee table books and local literature made it even tougher to walk past without browsing!

Leaving the Gallery Behind
🔹A bustling hub of authentic South African keepsakes.
🔹The final corner of the shop revealed a lively customer checkout zone, where the friendly staff—dressed in eye-catching leopard-patterned shirts—were helping international passengers finalize their purchases. From rows of shimmering bronze wire sculptures and delicate beaded jewelry to traditional carvings lining the mezzanine levels, the entire shop felt like a true cultural gallery. Snapping a few quick photos to archive the beautiful setup, we officially picked up our pace and headed straight for Gate A21.

Discovered the World of Biltong
🔹Coming across a dedicated tower of South Africa’s ultimate savory staple.
🔹While navigating our way toward Gate A21, we passed an interesting specialized kiosk under a sign reading "Taste of Africa Biltong." For the uninitiated, biltong is a traditional, premium cured and air-dried meat snack that originated right here in South Africa. The unique name stems from the historic Dutch words bil (meaning rump or hindquarter) and tong (meaning strip or tongue). Seeing the massive, towering display rack packed from top to bottom with neatly hung packets made it clear just how legendary this snack is to the local culture.

Exotic Game Varieties
🔹A diverse selection of wild African game meats ready to taste.
🔹Getting a closer look at the display rack revealed an incredibly diverse and exotic selection of meats that you would rarely find anywhere else in the world. Beyond traditional beef options, the packets are distinctly labeled with various indigenous African game species—including Kudu, Wildebeest, Eland, and Impala. This broad range highlights the historic, deeply rooted traditional preservation methods that have been expertly commercialized for global travelers looking to take a true taste of the safari home with them.

Diverse Halal Game Selection
🔹Discovering premium Halal-certified options across multiple species.
🔹As a traveler mindful of dietary requirements, I was absolutely delighted to discover that they offer a robust "Halal" version of these unique snacks as well! The curated selection features premium game varieties like Kudu, Ostrich, and Springbok. Even better, these specialized game meats are meticulously prepared in a variety of traditional styles—including original flavor, original sliced chunks, and original thin snapsticks—ensuring absolutely every traveler can comfortably enjoy this local culinary experience.

Official Halaal Assurance
🔹Clear peace of mind provided by the Muslim Judicial Council logo.
🔹What completely solidified our peace of mind was seeing the official certification prominently stamped on the packaging. Each bag carries a bright green, globally recognized "Halaal" emblem issued by the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) Halaal Trust, complete with a specific registration number (HT 4606). Finding such comprehensive dietary inclusivity right at the international departure terminal was a fantastic, welcoming surprise that beautifully wraps up our culinary reflections on South Africa.

Final Confirmation on the FIDS
🔹Double-checking our flight status before heading to the gate.
🔹Before making our final move, we paused underneath the massive Flight Information Display System (FIDS) monitors for a final status confirmation. It is always a good travel habit to check for last-minute gate changes or scheduling adjustments. Scanning down the board, we spotted our flight—South African Airways SA040 heading straight to Victoria Falls—confirmed for an 11:45 a.m. departure with the status reassuringly reading "Go to Gate A21."

Descending to the Boarding Lounge
🔹Moving down the escalators toward the bustling departure gates.
🔹With our gate officially locked in, we stepped onto the long escalators to descend into the lower levels of the departure terminal. The architectural design here opens up into a sweeping, high-ceilinged atrium flooded with natural light. Looking down at the lively sea of international travelers sorting through their hand luggage and settling into their seats, the fast-paced energy of an impending international departure felt incredibly real and exciting.

Tarmac Transit Momentum
🔹Boarding the Menzies apron bus to transfer to our remote stand.
🔹Our boarding call echoed over the loudspeakers at 10:55 a.m., prompting our disciplined group to swiftly queue up at the gate. Because our aircraft was parked out on a remote stand rather than a standard jet bridge, we filed out onto the tarmac to board a spacious Menzies passenger transport bus. Standing on the warm asphalt with the bright blue sky above and massive commercial liners idling in the background, the direct tarmac access made the boarding process feel like a true adventure.

Inside the Apron Shuttle
🔹A comfortable, smooth shuttle ride across the O.R. Tambo tarmac.
🔹Once everyone was safely on board, we settled into the wide-windowed interior of the airport shuttle for the short drive across the airfield. The bus was exceptionally clean and comfortable, fitted with sturdy blue handles and overhead grab bars for standing passengers. Rocking gently as the driver navigated past rows of baggage carts and fueling trucks, we watched the airport terminals recede out the glass, eagerly scanning the tarmac for our first glimpse of the South African Airways plane that would finally whisk us away to Zimbabwe.

Beneath the Jet Bridges
🔹A unique tarmac perspective of O.R. Tambo's grand boarding structures.
🔹The bus transfer to a remote stand comes with an incredible travel perk: it gives you a front-row seat to the behind-the-scenes mechanics of a massive global aviation hub. Looking out from our shuttle window, we cruised by the monumental steel and glass jet bridges stretching out from the terminal. Watching the ground crews in high-visibility vests organize baggage carts and airport vehicles right on the active asphalt gave us a newfound appreciation for the sheer scale of the operation.

Spotting Our Ride
🔹Catching our first glimpse of the South African Airways aircraft waiting in the sun.
🔹As the shuttle rounded a wide bend on the open airfield, a wave of excitement swept through our group as we spotted our ride idling under a brilliant, cloudless blue sky. Resting elegantly on a remote stand was our South African Airways plane, instantly recognizable by the bold, vibrant colors of the national flag painted proudly across its tail fin. Seeing the mobile stairs hooked up and waiting for us to climb aboard made the impending journey over the border feel incredibly real.

The Vast Flight Line
🔹Taking in the sweeping, open expanses of the industrial tarmac.
🔹Looking down the expanse of the terminal line highlights the immense, wide-open layout of O.R. Tambo International Airport. This panoramic view captures the industrial side of travel, from utility vehicles zipping past the concrete barricades to long rows of empty gates waiting for incoming flights. Experiencing the terminal from this unique ground-level angle completely changes your perspective, turning a routine airport transfer into a scenic tour of the runway.

Sitting Beside a Giant
🔹A breathtaking, close-up look at a Qatar Airways widebody liner.
🔹The absolute crown jewel of our tarmac drive was passing directly behind this massive, gleaming Qatar Airways widebody aircraft. Positioned right next to a glass boarding bridge, the dramatic close-up angle accentuates the sweeping design of its winglets and the towering majesty of its tail cone. Bathed in the intense morning sunlight, standing in the presence of these colossal long-haul liners right on the ground level is a magical, humbling experience that every aviation enthusiast would absolutely love.

Safe Ground Operations
🔹Completing our apron transport as we approach the aircraft.
🔹Our shuttle bus came to a smooth stop along the clearly painted lines on the ground, a safety boundary known in aviation as the ERA (Equipment Restraint Area). The driver carefully positioned the vehicle parallel to the plane rather than facing it directly—a vital protocol ensuring that if the brakes were to ever fail, the bus wouldn't roll forward into the fuselage. With everything secure, all passengers safely disembarked onto the tarmac and walked toward the boarding stairs, successfully wrapping up our apron passenger transport.

Navigating the Active Tarmac
🔹Ground crew members ensuring safe passage to the mobile stairs.
🔹Because an active airfield is an inherently hazardous environment filled with moving machinery, safety is tightly controlled. Ground crew members in high-visibility vests stood at the bus exit and alongside the boarding ramp to physically guide us forward. They essentially form a protective "invisible wall," ensuring that nobody mistakenly wanders near the plane's fragile sensors, heavy landing gear, or dangerous engine intakes as we file into the boarding queue.

Grateful for Golden Skies
🔹Looking up at a flawless blue sky mid-climb.
🔹As I began making my way up the steps of the mobile stairs, I couldn't resist pausing for a brief moment to look up at the stunning, cloudless canopy above us. The intense, deep blue sky was absolutely breathtaking. Holding onto my backpack strap, I couldn't help but feel incredibly grateful for the spectacular weather that has followed us throughout this journey, promising clear views and smooth flying conditions all the way across the border.

A Sacred Step onto the Plane
🔹Stepping across the threshold with a prayer for the journey ahead.
🔹Reaching the top of the ramp, I stepped across the threshold into the cabin of the aircraft that would officially take us to Zimbabwe. Crossing that entry line is always a significant moment for me as a traveler, and I quietly made a heartfelt dua (supplication) for our safety and peace of mind, reciting:

"Glory be to Him Who has brought this [vehicle] under our control, though we were unable to control it ourselves, and indeed, to our Lord we will surely return.

O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for actions that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the journey and the Guardian of our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, from witnessing a terrible sight, and from finding tragedy in my wealth and family upon my return."

With that comforting prayer anchoring my spirit, I moved inside to find our seats.

Window Seat Musings
🔹A perfect window view as we prepare to push back from the remote stand.
🔹Settling into our seats, the view out the thick aircraft window immediately put us in a travel frame of mind. Looking down the length of the wing, the vast, sun-baked expanse of O.R. Tambo International Airport stretched out toward the terminal structures under a perfectly clear blue sky. Watching the ground crew shadows lengthen across the asphalt and feeling the faint hum of the aircraft systems starting up built up a massive wave of excitement as we prepared to push back and taxi toward the runway.

Inside the Airbus A320-200
🔹The clean, comfortable cabin of South African Airways.
🔹This shot offers a fantastic look down the length of the cabin inside our Airbus A320-200, operated by South African Airways (SAA)—the state-owned national flag carrier of South Africa. The interior layout felt exceptionally bright, spacious, and modern. Overhead lockers were quickly packed with carry-on luggage, and the sleek dark leather seats were entirely filled with international passengers eagerly buckling their seatbelts, all sharing that collective sense of anticipation that comes right before an international takeoff.

In-Flight Service
🔹The professional SAA cabin crew preparing the cabin for departure.
🔹As we neared our push-back time, the South African Airways cabin crew moved gracefully down the aisles to conduct their final pre-flight safety checks. Dressed immaculately in their signature deep blue and yellow uniforms, their calm, professional, and welcoming demeanor immediately made everyone on board feel right at home.

Spotting a Fellow African Carrier
🔹A close-up tarmac look at a sleek Kenya Airways aircraft.
🔹As our plane began to taxi past the main terminal gates, I caught a view of a Kenya Airways aircraft idling by a glass jet bridge. The striking white fuselage, accented by its vibrant green and red tail livery and the iconic "The Pride of Africa" branding, looked absolutely magnificent in the bright morning sun. The huge glass windows of the airport terminal beautifully reflected the scene back onto the tarmac, serving as a brilliant visual reminder of how interconnected the African aviation network is as we prepared to join them in the skies.

🔹Spotting the striking red livery of Air Mauritius parked at the terminal gates.
🔹Looking out from the window of our South African aircraft, the distinctive red, white, and blue tones of Air Mauritius instantly caught my eye. Seeing their elegant Airbus widebody docked at the terminal jet bridge serves as a beautiful reminder of O.R. Tambo’s role as the premier aviation gateway connecting mainland Africa to the idyllic islands of the Indian Ocean.

🔹Catching a glimpse of the award-winning Qatar Airways Dreamliner prepping for its long-haul journey.
🔹Right next door, the instantly recognizable oryx logo on the tail fin of Qatar Airways commanded attention on the tarmac. Watching this long-haul giant prepare for its intercontinental trek back to Doha adds a brilliant touch of global flair to the pre-flight window view, making the wait on the Johannesburg tarmac feel like a front-row seat to the world of aviation.

🔹A spectacular lineup of global carriers parked side-by-side on the Johannesburg runway.
🔹As our plane taxied closer toward the runway, the view from the window offered a perfect aviation lineup. Seeing heavy hitters like Air France and EgyptAir parked in sequence emphasizes Johannesburg's status as a massive global aviation hub. There is something mesmerizing about sitting on board your flight, watching passengers board other aircraft bound for Paris, Cairo, and beyond, while your own path points toward the thundering waters of Zimbabwe.

🔹Tail fin spotting: Catching glimpses of Virgin Atlantic and Swiss International Air Lines.
🔹Just before we lined up for takeoff, a final glance out the window revealed a beautiful pair of European visitors—Virgin Atlantic and Swiss International Air Lines. The vibrant red tail fins added a splash of color to the airfield layout. Watching these aircraft rest between their massive intercontinental legs makes you appreciate the vast network connecting Africa to the rest of the world, right as you lift off for the quick, scenic hop to Victoria Falls.

🔹Wheels up! Leaving the runways of O.R. Tambo International Airport behind.
🔹The moment of liftoff is always magic, but climbing out over Johannesburg brings a unique perspective. Looking out past the wingtip, you can see the sprawling perimeter of O.R. Tambo International Airport quickly shrinking below. The contrasting landscape of open fields and developing terrain showcases the vast footprint of Africa's busiest aviation gateway as we set a direct course north toward Zimbabwe.

🔹A bird's-eye view of Johannesburg's urban grid and industrial hubs during climb-out.
🔹As the aircraft gained altitude, the dense commercial and residential grids of Gauteng unfolded directly beneath the wing. From this vantage point, you get a true sense of the city's scale—a sprawling metropolis of neatly arranged neighborhoods, retail complexes, and bustling roadways. Watching the morning traffic crawl below makes you appreciate the speed and freedom of traveling by air.

🔹Climbing high above the shifting landscapes and historic mining terrain of the Highveld.
🔹Higher into the climb, the urban scenery began to blend with the distinct geographical features of the South African Highveld. From the window, the remnants of local mining operations—characterized by light-colored sand dumps—stand out clearly alongside patches of deep blue lakes and urban developments. It is a visual story of a city built on gold, transitioning smoothly into the open African sky.

🔹Cruising past serene lakes and rural towns as we head toward the horizon.
🔹Just before the ground details began to soften into a distant tapestry, we soared past a beautiful blue reservoir nestled among rolling green hills and small communities. The aircraft's wing framed a picture-perfect view of South Africa's scenic landscape transitioning from the city to the countryside. With the seatbelt sign still off and a smooth flight ahead, the anticipation for Victoria Falls grows with every passing mile.

🔹Cruising altitude achieved: The vast expanse of the Gauteng province unfolds below.
🔹As the aircraft leveled out into a smooth cruise, the true scale of South Africa's heartland came into view. Looking past the sweeping wingtip, the dense urban borders of Johannesburg begin to give way to wider stretches of golden grassland and interconnected suburban developments. The incredibly clear blue sky creates a stark, beautiful contrast with the complex mosaic of land patterns stretching all the way to the horizon.

🔹A fascinating aerial look at the green green belts and industrial footprints carving through the terrain.
🔹Without the obstruction of the wing, this view offers a spectacular look at how the region’s geography blends nature with industry. A prominent green wetland corridor snakes directly through the center of the landscape, acting as a natural boundary between sprawling residential neighborhoods. In the foreground, the distinct dark shapes of industrial operations and heavy infrastructure showcase the hardworking backbone of the area.

🔹Looking down on the intricate layout of sprawling suburbs and commercial hubs.
🔹Peering lower beneath the aircraft wing reveals an intricate grid of highways, railway lines, and dense commercial clusters. It is mesmerizing to watch how neatly planned out these communities look from thousands of feet in the air. The shifting colors of the earth—ranging from dry winter brush to structured gray rooftops—tell the story of a modern metropolis thriving alongside the classic African veld.

🔹Spotting iconic landmarks from above as the journey north continues.
🔹Just before the ground details began fading into a distant tapestry, a final glance out the window revealed a perfectly formed oval racetrack or stadium complex nestled in the suburbs below. Tracking these distinct landmarks from the air adds a fun game of geography to the flight. With the city slowly disappearing behind us, our South African aircraft is now fully en route, charting a steady path toward the natural wonders of Victoria Falls.

🔹One final look at the sprawling South African landscape as we reach cruising altitude.
🔹As the aircraft climbed to its final cruising altitude, the rugged and beautifully textured terrain of the Highveld stretched out like a massive map below. The contrasting colors of the earth, mixed with patches of development and open wilderness, made it impossible to look away from the window. Watching the ground details slowly soften into a beautiful mosaic is always one of the most relaxing parts of a regional flight.

🔹Outstanding hospitality from the friendly cabin crew on our way to Victoria Falls.
🔹Once the seatbelt sign switched off, the inflight service swung into full gear. The cabin crew moved down the aisle with warm smiles, instantly making the cabin feel welcoming. It is always a pleasure to experience authentic African hospitality in the air, with attentive flight attendants ensuring every passenger is comfortable and well-cared for as we head steadily north toward Zimbabwe.

🔹Enjoying a delicious, flavorful vegetarian meal high above the clouds.
🔹For this flight, we opted for the special vegetarian meal option, and it did not disappoint. The tray arrived hot and neatly presented, featuring a colorful main dish of spiced yellow rice paired with flavorful beans, chickpeas, and cooked greens. Accompanied by a fresh side salad, a soft bread roll with butter, and a refreshing cup of water, it was a satisfying and healthy way to refuel during our journey.

🔹Sit back and relax: Experiencing a smooth and professional cabin atmosphere.
🔹The overall cabin environment remained calm, comfortable, and incredibly professional throughout the flight. With attentive crew members continuously checking on the passengers and ensuring a seamless experience, the time flew by quickly. Sitting back in the comfortable seats with a full stomach, the excitement only grew as we drew closer to our landing at Victoria Falls.

Flying Over Sua Pan, Botswana
🔹Tracing the ghostly white shores of Sua Pan from high above the clouds.
🔹As our flight deepens its journey north, the view from the window transitions into something truly ethereal. Stretching across the horizon is Sua Pan, a hyper-saline natural phenomenon located in northeastern Botswana. Forming the easternmost lobe of the world-famous Makgadikgadi Pans complex—one of the largest salt flat networks on Earth—its ghostly, sun-bleached surface cuts a striking white line against the surrounding wilderness, looking more like an alien landscape than a desert basin.

Overlooking Sua Pan
🔹A bird's-eye view of the vast and shimmering Makgadikgadi salt flat network.
🔹Peering past the aircraft's wingtip, the true, massive scale of Sua Pan unfolds beneath us. The shallow, shimmering waters and vast salt crusts create a stunning contrast with the deep blue sky. From thousands of feet in the air, you can see how this prehistoric lake bed dominates the northern Botswana landscape, standing as a stark reminder of the planet's dramatic natural history and offering a breathtaking geographic milestone on our route to Victoria Falls.

Spotting Nata, Botswana
🔹Tracking the vital crossroads village of Nata nestled just north of the pans.
🔹Looking closely just north of the salt pan's edge, a small hub of human life emerges amidst the vast terrain—the village of Nata, Botswana. Nestled along the banks of the Nata River, this bustling settlement serves as the ultimate crossroads and primary staging ground for adventurous travelers journeying between Francistown, Maun, and Kasane. Seeing its roads snake through the wilderness from above makes you appreciate how this vital outpost acts as the gateway to the wild heart of northern Botswana.

The Pandamatenga Farms
🔹Botswana's agricultural crown jewel: The striking geometric grids of the Pandamatenga Farms.
🔹Just before our final approach toward Zimbabwe, the wilderness below dramatically shifts into an immense patchwork of multicolored geometric shapes. This is the industrial-scale commercial "Mega-Farming" hub known as the Pandamatenga Farms. Situated in a unique border pocket near Sebutu, this area boasts incredibly fertile, heavy black clay soils rather than typical desert sands. From the air, the massive fields of sorghum, sunflowers, and wheat look like a giant living quilt, marking our final landmark before landing.

Crossing Borders: Pandamatenga to Kazuma Pan
🔹A stunning aerial view of the borderlands where mega-farming meets wild conservation.
🔹Peering out the window as we began our initial descent, the landscape below offered a fascinating geographical contrast. Tucked into the upper left corner of the frame are the distinctive geometric lines of the Pandamatenga Farms in Botswana. Right alongside this agricultural hub, the terrain shifts dramatically into the vast, untouched wilderness of Kazuma Pan National Park. It is a remarkable sight from above—seeing the precise boundaries where human ingenuity and intensive farming seamlessly meet Africa’s wild, protected plains.

Spatially Spotting the Spray
🔹The first glimpse of the legendary spray rising from the flat savanna.
🔹As our South African aircraft descended further, we eagerly scanned the horizon for one of the natural wonders of the world. Because commercial flights from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls traditionally approach from the south, sitting on the left side of the aircraft paid off immensely. Far beyond the sweeping wingtip, a distinct white column began to materialize against the flat landscape. It looked exactly like a permanent cloud rising from the earth, signaling our rapid approach to the mighty Zambezi.

First View of "The Smoke that Thunders"
🔹Spotting the massive water spray column of Mosi-oa-Tunya from kilometers away.
🔹The indigenous people of this region call the falls Mosi-oa-Tunya, which beautifully translates to "The Smoke that Thunders." Flying in during May 2026 put us right at the tail end of the peak high-water season. From our front-row seats on the left side of the cabin, we could clearly see the legendary spray column shooting anywhere from 300 to 500 meters into the air. Even from kilometers away, the towering plume of vapor stands out perfectly against the deep green canopy below.

The Dramatic Approach to Victoria Falls
🔹Front-row seats to the spectacular plume of Victoria Falls during our final banking descent.
🔹During the pilot's standard banking descent and alignment for the runway, the left side of the plane historically provides the most dramatic views of the region. As the aircraft tilted, the scale of the water spray column became even more jaw-dropping. Seeing this massive, thundering mist rise straight out of the savanna is a sight we will never forget. It served as the ultimate welcome party from the skies, leaving us absolutely thrilled to finally land and see the falls up close.

Touchdown at Victoria Falls
🔹Touchdown in Zimbabwe! Smoothly landing at Victoria Falls International Airport.
🔹With a gentle chirp of the tires meeting the tarmac, our journey in the skies came to a beautiful conclusion. Looking out the window as the spoilers deployed on the wing, the runway of Victoria Falls International Airport unfolded beneath us under a gorgeous, cloud-dappled sky. The warmth of the afternoon sun and the sight of another aircraft taxiing ahead instantly made the reality sink in—we had officially arrived at the gateway of one of the world's greatest natural wonders.

Terminal in Sight
🔹First glimpses of the modern Victoria Falls terminal building from the taxiway.
🔹As our South African aircraft slowed down and began to taxi off the main runway, the striking profile of the airport terminal came into view. The combination of clean modern architecture and distinctive conical roof structures perfectly captures the spirit of the region. Watching the airport ground crew prep for our arrival from the window brought a rush of pure excitement for the adventures waiting just outside the aircraft doors.

An Unexpected Dream Come True
🔹A dream we never knew we had: Arriving in beautiful Zimbabwe.
🔹Staring out at the main terminal building, a wave of reflection washed over me. Never in my wildest dreams did I think my wife and I would one day travel to Zimbabwe. In fact, when planning our global travel goals over the years, even South Africa was always near the very bottom of our wish list. Yet, here we were, sitting on the tarmac looking at the "Welcome to Zimbabwe" sign, completely humbled by how beautifully unpredictable life can be when you stay open to new horizons.

Up Close with Victoria Falls International Airport
🔹A closer look at the stunning architecture welcoming travelers to the falls.
🔹Pulling right up closer to the gates, the full architectural beauty of Victoria Falls International Airport was on display. The modern blue glass facade, paired with traditional design elements and its soaring control tower, makes a fantastic first impression on international travelers. Stepping off the plane and into this vibrant, welcoming terminal felt like the perfect official start to a Zimbabwean journey we will undoubtedly cherish forever.

Reflecting on an Unforgettable Journey to the Smoke that Thunders
Looking back from the window of our South African aircraft as it came to a final stop on the tarmac, this short regional flight turned out to be an unforgettable journey of unexpected wonders. What began as a bustling takeoff from O.R. Tambo International Airport quickly evolved into a masterclass in aerial geography. From spotting global carriers on the ground and tracing the ghostly, sun-bleached expanse of Botswana’s Sua Pan, to marveling at the geometric patchwork of the Pandamatenga mega-farms, every mile offered something spectacular. But the true crown jewel of the trip was our lucky vantage point on the left side of the cabin, rewarding us with a breathtaking first look at the towering 500-meter spray of Mosi-oa-Tunya rising majestically over the savanna. Arriving at Victoria Falls International Airport was a beautiful reminder that the most profound travel experiences are often the ones we never expected to take. We stepped off the plane not just as visitors to Zimbabwe, but as travelers completely captivated by the magic of the African skies, eagerly waiting to see what wonders await us on the ground.

Till the next coming entry, inshaAllah. Meanwhile do take care.
